Job description

Cloud DevOps Platform Engineer

At IT Clouds we are responsible for creating and operating Swisscom's IaaS services for large and medium sized enterprises. Collaboration is at the heart of what we do — we develop and implement ideas in a modular way across teams.

You will be part of a newly formed hybrid DevOps team based in Rotterdam, working as an extension of our Swiss based Agile Release Trains. Together, you will design and build the next generation of our cloud platform based on open source virtualization technology, with a strong focus on compute, virtualization, and networking (SDN).

As a DevOps Engineer, you will work closely with our architects to shape reliable, secure, and scalable environments for our enterprise customers. Our teams bring together specialists from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and disciplines to craft innovative solutions that make a real impact.

What impact will you have?

  • Design and build of the cloud platform based on open-source virtualization technology, focusing on compute, virtualization, and networking (SDN).

  • Integration and operation of KVM/QEMU for the virtualization layer and OVN/OVS for SDN, tenant isolation, routing, and network segmentation.

  • Automation of provisioning, configuration, and day-to-day operations using IaC and CI/CD.

  • Definition and implementation of operational models for monitoring, alerting, logging, incident, problem, and change management.

  • Technical coordination with architecture, security, operations, and external vendors, as well as validation through integration, failover, and acceptance testing.

Job requirements

Must-haves:

  • Excellent Linux/systems engineering experience in near-production environments.

  • Deep, hands-on expertise in KVM, QEMU, libvirt, and OVN/Open vSwitch.

  • Understanding of IP networks, Layer 2/Layer 3, overlay networks, routing, NAT, ACLs/Security Groups, load balancing, and tenant separation.

  • Experience in building or operating private cloud/IaaS/virtualization platforms with a focus on high availability, scalability, and resilience.

  • Excellent knowledge of automation/IaC with tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Python, and Bash.

  • Experience with Git, GitLab/GitHub, CI/CD, and standardized release and deployment processes.

  • Solid observability expertise with tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/OpenSearch, as well as structured error analysis and RCA.

  • Experience with security hardening, secrets, certificates, RBAC/IAM, and operational security requirements.

  • Independent, resilient individual with a strong ownership mindset.

  • Fluent in written and spoken English. German language skills are an advantage.

Nice-to-haves:

  • Experience with Ubuntu/Canonical, Proxmox, or other OS-based hypervisor technologies, either directly or with comparable cloud/IaaS platforms.

  • Knowledge of Kubernetes/KubeVirt/Kube-OVN and the interfaces between VM, container, and network platforms.

  • Experience in service provider/telco/managed service environments.

  • Knowledge of SRE, DevSecOps, engineering practices, and platform governance.

  • Experience with cloud landing zones, IAM/network design, DR/BCM, and service management processes.

  • Knowledge of storage integration for virtualization platforms, performance tuning, and capacity forecasting.

  • Certifications in Linux, networking, Kubernetes, or cloud/IaC are a plus.
